A surgeon performs surgery on patients to repair injured tissue and organs, or to prevent further complications of a disease or accident. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that job opportunities for surgeons will continue to be very good. An individual must first complete undergraduate and medical school before beginning a three to eight year residency program at a hospital. The length of the residency will depend greatly on whether a surgeon chooses to specialize in a particular area of the human body. A surgeon’s career is a demanding one and includes working long and irregular hours and being able to manage a large amount of stress. Becoming a surgeon can take a long time, however, the profession is one of the highest paid in the medical field with surgeons earning between $250,000 and $350,000 per year.
