Geriatric
Geriatric nurses educate, counsel, and support elderly patients and their families about achieving independence for patients and managing the care of an elderly person. A nurse desiring to work in this field should be compassionate and patient. Educational requirements include earning either a Bachelor’s Degree or Associate’s Degree in Nursing, or completing a nursing school program. In addition, the American Nurses Credentialing Center, or ANCC, offers three main categories of certification for geriatric nurses, including one for an RN and two for nurses with an advanced educational degree like a Master’s Degree. Candidates may be more attractive to employers if they obtain certification.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that job opportunities for geriatric nursing will be excellent going forward. A nurse working in geriatric nursing will earn $50,000 to $70,000 per year depending on experience and geographical location of the position.
