JOB SUMMARY


Under the general direction of the Executive Director of Ancillary Services, the Laboratory Director oversees day to day functions of the laboratory to ensure high quality diagnostic testing and all laboratory activities comply with organization and regulatory agency standards. The Laboratory Director takes responsibility for staffing, budgeting, licensure, operations, quality assurance, proficiency, and competency of staff in accordance with JCAHO, federal, state, and local guidelines, organizational and departmental policies, and procedures. Plans, organizes, and Manage staff competencies and education, as well as Implement and adhere to lab compliance policies and keep well-documented and effective quality control program in the Laboratory. Position requires self-motivation, creativity, and capabilities to function in a semi-autonomous role within a fast pace and dynamic environment. Responsible for the supervision of up to 15 professional and clerical personnel.


JOB QUALIFICATIONS:


Minimum Level of Education: Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory, chemical, physical or biological sciences.


Formal Training: Management skills with experience in planning, organizing, implementing, facilitating, interviewing, counseling, and verbal and written communications. Strong problem-solving, training, team building, and mentoring abilities a must.


Licensure, Certification, Registration: Medical technologist certification (ASCP or equivalent) required. Must comply with current State of Georgia requirements.


Work Experience: At least Three years prior supervisory or Directorial experience in a clinical hospital laboratory setting and five years pertinent clinical laboratory services experience. Expert knowledge of Laboratory health and safety protocols, and COLA/CLIA regulations required.


STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE


1. Ensures departmental adherence to proper infection control, OSHA and safety standards.


2. Reviews Laboratory policies and procedures, job descriptions and makes recommended changes.


3. Evaluates the qualification and competence of department personnel in accordance with time frame established by the organization.


4. Coordinates and participates in continuing education.


5. Makes recommendations to Administration for and assists in the development of new programs and research for special projects.


6. Responsible for the assessment and maintenance of the department performance improvement program.


7. Prepares departmental annual operating budget and capital equipment budget; and operates department expenditures within approved budget.


8. Responsible for maintaining organizational facilities in accordance with JCAHO, federal and state, organizational and departmental policies, and procedures.


9. Interviews and makes recommendations for hiring of personnel within department.


10. Perform administrative requirements such as completing necessary forms, reports, etc., and submit as required.


11. Maintain department expenditure records as required, and/or perform cost analysis as needed.


12. Ensure correct labeling of chemicals and biologicals to comply with existing regulations and established facility policies and procedures.


13. Ensure correct disposal of all chemicals, used/contaminated supplies, and biological specimens to comply with existing regulations and established facility policy and procedures


14. Maintain an adequate supply of laboratory materials, e.g., reagents, test tubes; to meet the needs of the patients and facility.


15. Develop and periodically review a listing of authorized symbols and abbreviations used for charting, ordering tests, etc.


16. Recommend to the CEO, CFO the supply and equipment needs of the department.


17. Make written/oral reports to the CEO on any matters concerning the laboratory services as needed, necessary, required or requested.


18. Ensure the laboratory and storage areas are maintained in a clean and safe manner.


19. Ensure that equipment is receives proper scheduled maintenance and calibration and document any maintenance calibration performed.


20. Reviews and acts upon authorized inspection agency standards, requirements, and reports.


21. Maintain appropriate workflow by proper staffing and performing benchwork as necessary.


22. Promote quality, high standards of performance, and good morale in the department.


23. Perform other duties as necessary, assigned, and/or required.
