Job Title: Social Services & Indian Child Welfare Advocate

Location: Kootenai Tribe of Idaho; Bonners Ferry, ID

General Summary of Duties: The Social Services and Indian Child Welfare Advocate is a full-time position and under the direction of the Tribal Council will provide necessary assessment, evaluation, intervention information and referral in areas of child welfare and/or social services. The Advocate will also work with other Tribal Personnel (psychologist, medical staff, health director, etc.) in recommending treatment and counseling plans and activities that promote prevention and recreation for affected children and/or adults. This position must attend training, community meetings, and serve on committees as necessary. This position will also serve as a liaison between the Kootenai Tribal Court System, Kootenai Tribal Health Department, State, and Local courts and agencies.

Typical Physical Demands: Requires sitting for long periods of time, some standing, stooping, bending and reaching is required and may require lifting up to 30 pounds. Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate and computer and telephone as well as normal range of hearing and vision.

SPECIFIC DUTIES: 1. Work with Tribal Psychologist to maintain treatment and counseling plans for children and families. 2. Conduct home visits where affected children and families reside to fill out necessary forms as required by Courts/Agencies. 3. Advocate and support children and families in court proceedings. 4. Keep current reference list of services and resources available to children and families and make available to Tribal Members. 5. Coordinate workshops of awareness in Child Welfare, Courts, Services for Tribal Members. 6. Work Closely with Tribal Police on matters involving Child and Domestic Abuse Prevention and Protection. 7. Other duties as assigned.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS: 1. Must be able to manage multiple priorities, do basic budget computations, write clearly, prepare program reports and other correspondence. 2. Must be comfortable meeting with agency personnel, able to discuss Tribal needs, and ensure that the Tribe's interests are being represented. 3. Must have good interpretational skills, be able to negotiate, provide supervision and guidance. 4. Must be familiar with consensus decision making and collaboration techniques.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Must have at least a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work or related field, Master's Degree preferred. 2. MSW, LCSW of similar license required. 3. Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience social services work, child advocacy or similar environment. Experience working with Indian Tribes is preferred. 4. Must have knowledge of ICWA Regulations, ability to advocate for Indian Children, knowledge of Privacy Act and ability to maintain confidentiality. Experience in Child Protection is desired.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Current Driver's License and ability to be insured by Tribal Insurance Company. 2. First Aid or CPR Certification, or ability to obtain immediately. 3. Must maintain current license and continuing education. 4. Culturally sensitive to the customs, traditions, and practices and sovereign status of the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho. 5. The Kootenai Tribe of Idaho is a Drug Free workplace and all employees are subject to a drug screen prior to employment. 6. Background Check. -Native American Preference will be exercised.
