As a Dental Research Scientist, you will conduct dental research that focuses on ways to enhance the health, safety, performance, and operational readiness of Air Force personnel and address their emergent dental problems in routine and combat operations. Additionally, you will conduct technical evaluation of dental equipment, devices, and materials resulting in objective, statistically sound, evidence-based evaluation reports.   In addition, Presents research project ideas, develops and designs research protocols, so e of which may be novel approaches to solve elusive or highly complex problems, determines required equipment and other resources, creates research committees as necessary, oversees data collection, runs statistical analysis, submits abstracts, presents research findings at national or international action to submit manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and technical adequacy of the item for which it is intended.


  • This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use

  •  Required to have and maintain a permanent and unrestricted license to practice dentistry and must meet credentialing/accreditation requirements.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Professional knowledge and skills of current concepts, principles, techniques and practices to perform clinical dentistry.

  • Knowledge of infection control, safety and security regulations, practices and procedures and the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act.

  • Specialized knowledge of principles and techniques to engage in scientific investigations of dental materials and devices of dental and maxillofacial significance.

  • Knowledge of clinical and biomedical research, statistical analysis and statistical techniques as they apply to compilation of data, analysis of trends, future projections, and reporting data consistent with acceptable usage in medical research.

  • Knowledge of dental terminology and administrative requirements for proper record keeping procedures, to maintain accurate patient dental health records.

  • Skills in planning objectives, preparing reports, conducting training and lectures, advanced computer/word processing skills.


Other Significant Facts:

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent in a degree related field is highly desired.

  • History of research publications in scientific peer-reviewed journals is highly desired.

  • Experience with research and testing equipment is highly desired.

  • The position requires Basic Life Support and other unit specific training, in accordance with hospital policies.

  • This position is included in the Hospital Employee Health Program, and the tuberculosis/Human Immunodeficiency Virus Surveillance examination programs.

  • May be required to work other than normal duties hours, in support of the unit mission

  • Participates in continuing education seminars, workshops, and lectures, to update knowledge of current dental concepts and to maintain required certification.

  • Work may require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft in the performance of temporary duty assignments.

  • Duties are performed in an environment that requires alertness, safety precautions, strength and stamina, and, in some instances, protective clothing or gear to prevent or control exposure to dangerous substances, loud noises, or projected debris.

  • This position is designated as a key position IAW AFI 36-507. Duties of this position are essential to the Incumbents of key positions must be removed from their military recall status if alternative for filling of the position during an emergency are not available.
