Description:

The Air Force Civilian Service (AFCS) and the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC) is seeking a dynamic, collaborative educational leader to serve as the Dean of Graduate Medical and Allied Health Education and Designated Institutional Official (Dean/DIO). 


The incumbent, in collaboration with the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC), has authority and responsibility for the oversight of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited residency and fellowship programs.  The incumbent is responsible for ensuring compliance with ACGME Institutional and Program Requirements (i.e., common and specialty-/subspecialty-specific), ACGME Policies and Procedures, Dept of Defense policies and procedures, and GME/GAHE related accreditation standards of the Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME). The incumbent, in collaboration with the GMEC, Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) and Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center (WHASC) leaders, and leaders across affiliate sites (University of Texas Health at San Antonio), oversees the quality of the clinical learning and working environments, and helps to facilitate continuous performance improvement to enhance health care quality and safety, wellness, and readiness of graduates for clinical practice. The incumbent provides oversight of the Graduate Medical Education Office, deans and staff.


The successful applicant must have demonstrated expertise in administrative and educational leadership, a passion for educational excellence, and a proven track record in graduate medical education including effective program management (e.g., Program Director) and performance improvement. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated excellence in mentoring and leading teams, expertise in educational program development and assessment, and as well a commitment to innovation in medical education.


The San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC) mission is to improve military health and readiness by graduating physician-officers and graduate allied health-officers who are ready to meet the needs and challenges of the Military Health System and our beneficiaries through professional leadership, clinical competence, and a commitment to scholarship, quality improvement, and patient safety.  SAUSHEC as one of the largest Department of Defense (DoD) educational consortia supports 37 GME and 22 GAHE (Allied Health) programs with over 700 trainees with Tri-Service representation (Army, Air Force, and Navy).  Located in San Antonio, TX the main academic affiliation is with the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). 


This is a 1.0 FTE administrative appointment with 90% time expected in GME and 10% time in clinical or medical education research or teaching activities. As a member of the faculty, the incumbent will be expected to engage in the educational, research or clinical practice missions based on credentials, experience and aspirations.


Minimum Qualifications and Competencies:



  • U.S. Citizenship

  • M.D./D.O. degree with board certification in their specialty and eligible for a TX medical license and/or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

  • Demonstrated a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness in leadership and possess the ability to work with a varied group of educators and stakeholders

  • Minimum of five (5) years of previous leadership experience in GME (e.g., DIO, Assistant/Associate DIO, or equivalent)

  • 5 years previous graduate medical education experience with particular emphasis in program and curriculum development, assessment, and continuous program quality improvement

  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills including building and leading teams

  • Exemplary professionalism and a results orientation

  • Demonstrated leadership and management competencies
