The Air Force Civilian Service (AFCS) is looking for an Industrial Hygienist to work at the 79th Medical Group, 79th Aerospace Medicine Squadron, Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight, Andrews AFB, MD. In this position,  The primary purpose of this position is: To manage the industrial hygiene element of the Bioenvironmental Engineering Fight, to include monitoring industrial hygiene (TH) services, identification and evaluation of conditions affecting the health and efficiency of employees, the formulation and recommendation of measures to eliminate or control occupational health hazards, and the promotion of occupational health programs.


This is a federal government position with no active duty commitments.


SALARY RANGE: $68,036 - $88,450




  • U.S citizenship


  • A bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or


  • A bachelor’s degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hoursin chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or


  • Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (external link) (ABIH).


  • Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.


  • The incumbent of this position must be able to possess a current government driver's license and will be required to operate a government vehicle in the performance of official duties.


  • Employee must comply with all requirements and aspects of1he 891.h Medical Group's Infection Control and Employee Health Programs.






  • Plans, programs and budgets for all facets of the installation industrial hygiene program element.


  • Plans and conducts the full range of industrial hygiene programs within the missions of the Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight.



  • Plans and conducts comprehensive industrial hygiene evaluations of work centers throughout the installation.


  • Manages and administers the installation respiratory protection program.



  • Investigates installation worker job-related health problems such as injury compensation claims and environmental differential pay claims.


  • Assists in emergency response actions on base and technical consultant.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA’s) Note:  Your resume and qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:


  • Ability to research, compile and analyze information/data and resolve discrepancies.

  • Ability to plan, organize work, and meet deadlines.

  • Knowledge of established industrial hyg1ene principles, practices, procedures, laws, regulations, and current legislative issues as they relate to the military installation industrial hygiene/occupational health program.

  • Knowledge of regulatory standards including OSHA, FPA, DOD, AF, and NFPA.

  • Knowledge of communication techniques, principles and regulations 10 communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in responding to work related problems and questions.

  • Skill in problem solving and data manipulation.

  • Skill in the interpretation of engineering drawings and specifications sufficient to identify hazardous conditions in proposed facilities.

  • Ability to recognize, evaluate and control hazardous work center environments.

  • Ability to use complicated instrumentation when performing industrial hygiene surveys.
