Job Description

The Air Force Civilian Service (AFCS) is looking for a Clinical Nurse Specialist Intensive Care to work at 60 MDG, 60AMW, Travis AFB, CA. The primary purpose of this position is to provide comprehensive nursing care to critically ill patients in Critical Care units, Intensive Care, Coronary Care, Step Down and Neonatal lntensive Care Units. Patients are characterized by the presence of actual or potential life-threatening health problems. May be used in appropriate ICU, Critical Care, or NICU units within 60 MDG.


This is a federal government position with no active duty commitments.


SALARY RANGE: $98,722  -  $125,377


  • U. S. Citizenship

  • May be required to work rotating shifts.

    • Position may be designated as a testing designated position (TOP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Testing Program.

    • The position is identified as having "regular contact with children", requiring a State Criminal History Repository (SCHR) check to be completed on any person selected for the position.

    • Must maintain a current R.N license.

    • This is a "KEY" position. Incumbents must be removed from their military recall status if alternatives for filling the position during an emergency are not available.




  • Provides comprehensive professional nursing care to critically ill patients such as cardiac, surgical, medical, neurological, hematology, oncology, neonatal, and other medical specialties that require adaptation of established nursing procedures.


  • Mixes and administers prescribed medications orally, intramuscularly, subcutaneously intravenously, topically, and knows which drugs will alter the effects of another drug if administered concurrently prior to the administration of medication. 


  • Participates in continuing education programs to update and/or maintain skills and knowledge to meet annual requirements.

  • Assesses patient and family to include physical and psychological needs through a detailed history. Provides instructions to patient1significant other and/or family members.

  • Serves as a resource person with whom other critical care nurses and other health care providers consult when particularly difficult problems in care of critically ill patients arise.



RECRUITMENT KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA): The description of your work experience in your application must clearly demonstrate that you gained and currently possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) shown below to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position being filled:



  • Knowledge of an extensive range of professional nursing care theories, principles, practices, and procedures to perform highly specialized nursing assignments in caring for complex, critically ill patients (medical. surgical, cardiac, neurological, hematology, oncology, etc.) requiring extended specialized training and experience, or education in the clinical nurse specialist specialty area.

    • Knowledge of a variety of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment, the desired effects, side effects, and complications of their use.

    • Knowledge of the administrative requirements for proper documentation of patient’s condition including disease progress, acknowledgement of teaching, and follow up care.

    • Skill in setting up, operating, and monitoring sophisticated specialized medical equipment such as cardiac monitors, respirators, ventilators, various intravenous infusion pumps, defibrillators, and equipment required for peritoneal dialysis.

    • Ability to provide guidance to other professional nurses and paraprofessional personnel.

    • Ability to communicate orally and in writing with a diverse group of individuals.
