Summary:


The Histotechnologist I, II or III works under general supervision precisely and accurately performs a variety of routine and specialized histology techniques and procedures This Histotechnologist I, II or III will research, troubleshoot, and resolve histology related inquiries and problems within the laboratory. This position requires the production of the highest quality of embedding, microtomy, tissue grossing, tissue processing, and H&E staining, special staining and equipment maintenance.


This is the entry level in Histotechnologist job category. Employees in this position perform a full range of technical procedures in the preparation of tissue specimens.


Responsibilities:


Core Responsibilities


EVENING SHIFT: Tuesday - Saturday 9 PM - 5:30 AM



  • Receives specimens of tissue and ensures proper accessioning and labeling of all tissue samples

  • Processes paperwork associated with accessioning and reporting

  • Performs routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologist(s), according to established SOP's

  • Prepares tissue specimens with chemicals, slicing, and mounting on glass slides for microscopic examination and analysis

  • Embeds processed tissue in paraffin

  • Performs coverslipping of stained slides either manually or automated

  • Performs all special stain procedures according to established guidelines

  • Performs filing of finished blocks and slides

  • Helps maintain acceptable productivity, TAT and workflow

  • Reports problems concerning individual cases, tests, equipment, and supplies to the department supervisor or lead technologist to ensure timely resolution

  • Responds promptly to pathologists, technologists, and administrative requests

  • Maintains laboratory in a clean, functional state, as well as cleaning, performing or scheduling equipment and instrument maintenance/calibration/certification, as required. Documents remedial actions such as repairs or repeated tests

  • Demonstrates initiative in making suggestions to improve efficiency and productivity and provides consistent feedback

  • Attends monthly department and any additional training/educational meetings

  • Participates in quality control initiatives. Prepares lab for inspection from regulatory institutions


Additional Responsibilities (may be assigned):



  • May prepare solutions and reagents for IHC procedures under the direct supervision of a qualified technologist, technical supervisor or other qualified pathologist

  • May obtain and validate control material used in IHC procedures

  • May perform IHC testing under the direct supervision of a qualified technologist, technical supervisor or other qualified pathologist

  • Monitors, maintains, orders and stocks laboratory equipment and supplies

  • May serve as the Safety Officer

  • Perform other duties as assigned by department Supervisor or Lead technologist


 Position Objectives:



  • Achieves desired level of competency and accuracy for the main department processes and responsibilities of assigned position, as defined in established SOP's, within 6 months

  • Meets or exceeds productivity expectations

  • Reports quality results with limited errors

  • Maintains satisfactory results on all department specific competency assessments

  • Works productively and efficiently to achieve company and departmental goals

  • Communicates effectively with all levels of staff

  • Adheres to NeoGenomics Laboratories core values, safety, compliance, and Company policies and procedures


Education:


Associates degree in the field and complete a one year internship or complete a long-term training program in a histopathology lab


Experience:


Level I: (1) One plus years equivalent experience as a Histotechnician preferred
Level II: (4) Four plus years equivalent experience as a Histotechnician preferred
Level III: (6) Six plus years equivalent experience as a Histotechnician preferred


Qualification Requirements:



  • Basic understanding of laboratory techniques

  • Possesses appropriate computer skills to accomplish tasks

  • Ability to communicate effectively

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Ability to work independently

  • Must be able to work in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment and maintain production and quality standards

  • Must be able to work in a biohazard environment and comply with safety policies and standards outlined in the Safety Manual

  • Good visual acuity including color perception required for certain departments

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds

  • Nationally: HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP)


Certificate Compliance Requirements:



  •  FL: current Histotechnician or Histotechnologist license

  • CA: current state license to perform laboratory testing

  • TN: current state license to perform laboratory testing
