Job description

The Air Force Civilian Service (AFCS) is looking for Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner at the 99th Medical Operations Squadron, 99th Medical Group, Nellis AFB, Nevada. To provide comprehensive and advance level nursing care services in quality mental health prevention, education, assessment, and treatment services to Active Duty, family members and DoD eligible beneficiaries, with the goal of successful mission sustainment.


SALARY RANGE: $102,653 - $128,794



  • U.S. citizenship

  • Must acquire and maintain certification in Basic Life Support (Completed within 3 months or less of appointment).

  • Degree or diploma is required from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated state accrediting agency at the time the program was completed is required.

  • Selection Placement Factor: Graduation from a Master’s degree program with specialization as a psychiatric nurse practitioner accredited by a national nursing accrediting agency recognized by the US Department of Education. By 2015 entry level to practice will be at the doctoral level.

  • Selection Placement Factor: National Certification in Adult Psychiatry is required. FNP with CNS Adult Psychiatry certification would also be acceptable.

  • Must maintain a valid, unrestricted registered nurse license and a Certified Register Nurse Practitioner license (with no limitations, stipulations, or pending adverse actions) in one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.

  • Incumbent will be working with the military and be required to learn the Special Needs Identification and Assignment Coordination process.

  • May occasionally be required to travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft

  • Criminal History Background check must be completed (FBI-fingerprint and SCHR).


  • Provides leadership in advanced practice nursing, preventive and therapeutic psychiatric health care services to patients in military treatment facility environment.

  • Provides evidence-based psychotherapy.

  • Provides indirect patient care, community development and integrated behavioral health services.

  • Provides psychiatric training for the mental health flight and for other physicians as requested by the Mental Health Flight Commander, the Mental Health Element Chief and or Chief of Hospital Services.


  KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA’s) Note:  Your resume and qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

  • Thorough knowledge of evident-based treatment modalities for individual, family and group psychotherapies for a full range of adult psychiatric conditions. Techniques and modalities are based on accepted theories, principles and practices.

  • Knowledge of personality development theories for evaluating behavior and reaction patterns of patients. Requires mastery of a wide range of nursing and medical principles, theories, techniques, and practices to perform the clinical evaluation and the medial management of patients with psychiatric disorders requiring intensive outpatient treatment.

  • Knowledge of general pharmacology and relative expertise regarding medicines commonly used in psychiatry. Must be able to rationally recommend pharmacotherapy; evaluate treatment for efficacy, toxicity and side effects; evaluate potential for drug interactions; evaluate the impact of pharmacotherapy on co morbid medical conditions; and evaluated the contribution of medications taken for medical illness to the current psychiatric disorder needing treatment.

  • Ability to understand and work within the military health care system, entailing comprehensive knowledge of Department of Defense regulations, Air Force instructions, AAAHC standards, Air Force Inspector General Health Services Inspection standards, and HIPAA regulations.

  • Ability to use a computer for word processing, data management and the prescribing medication.
