A physician with an emphasis in pulmonary medicine treats patients with medical conditions that affect their respiratory system. To become a pulmonologist, one must earn an undergraduate degree and a medical degree. In addition, physicians interested in working in pulmonary medicine must complete a three-year residency program in internal medicine before starting a two-year fellowship training in pulmonary medicine. A physician must pass a board certified exam in pulmonary medicine before one can begin practicing. After all this training, a pulmonologist can expect to earn between $215,000 and $400,000 per year based on skill and geographical location. Like other careers in the health care field, job prospects for individuals working in pulmonary medicine are expected to be very good in the future.
