A gastroenterologist studies the human digestive system and treats patients with stomach conditions. Gastroenterologists are physicians that have focused their medical training on the digestive system. Like all physicians, gastroenterologists must complete undergraduate school and medical school. Physicians specializing in gastroenterology must also complete four years of a residency and two to three years in a gastroenterology fellowship before practicing. While it takes a long time to complete the training and education necessary to become a gastroenterologist, the average salary is above $300,000 per year depending on employer and geographical location. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for gastroenterologists are expected to be better than average compared to all other areas of employment.
